| But in my defence, the .cfg I sent need only be used ONCE! -- just
| long enough to generate a .log, then as I keep saying Eric can

| lines need to be changed if there is any further problem.

| Seriously tho, although I know that more work can be done in clean
| code than in dirty (that's why I have ca. 300K of free memory) the
| fact is that even I wish I was not so fanatical about gettting rid
| of dead code. When I'm trying to get a systems analyist's view of
| something I just hafta cut out everything that isn't imediately 
| useful because it clouds my vision -- but it goes to far at times since
| I know pefectly well that sometimes achieval code is good to have
| around. Clarity has it's price, since I hafta use older versions
| sometimes to see the history of some code or other.

| That was never at issue. As I've said many times, nothing is ever
| thown away it's just a case of where it is stored. 90% of the time
| when I cut out dead code, I never need to see it again, but it is 
| there in the original sources should it ever be needed, and that's
| fine.  But I tend to cut a little prematurely at times, when it realy
| should sit in my sources for a bit longer, the cost is the need 
| to reference a previous base when more caution would make that
| unnecessary. But, to repeat, NOTHING is ever thrown away.

| the phoney '8x14_mht.fnt' and intead in the .cfg change

| Now once you get it working right, save the resulting .log file.
| Then save (in case of emergency)  the .cfg I sent you if you don't like
| it. Restore the one you like, run it, do a 'vc' (or 'fc') of that
| .log with the .log you previously saved. If there are any differences,
| note which keywords produce different values and then add/edit
| those keywords in your prefered .cfg and rerun. Now, the .log
| produced should be identical to the .log you saved and you
| are all set and you can delete the .cfg I sent you. See? it's
| done it's job and you can get rid of it (or just get used to the
| idea of having a nicely organized .cfg with no dead keywords ;-))

| As to the error page, perhaps this is something to do with
| your ramdrive instalation. It sounds like it must be cache related,
| but maybe somehow something with the ramdrive fouls up something
| to do with cache. With 'ReloadPrevious Y' does this problem
| still happen? Esp. with a local file, I mean if you load c:\autoexec.bat
| then quit and restart, that file should reload, does it still
| give that error? If so, I'm stumped <:-\

| differently but things do slip past, so it could be there too.
| When you click on a link a huge number of things happen, there can
| be thousands of function calls before she settles down again so

| Oh, to use older cores, you'd need the files that came with them,
| no chance of runing an older core with newer keywords.cfg! -- they
| are absolutely locked together with the core they come with. Ditto
| for the other files. If you don't have the whole setup, don't even
| try it.

| This 'path not found' is our first hot tip. As I discovered a few 
| days ago, under 4DOS you can do this:

| rarachne.bat >> dos.txt
|
| ... and then all messages and errors from dos are sent to that file
| for the durration of the session. I'm not sure if it works that way
| under command.com but you could try. Once we capture that error
| msg. we'll have this bagged I'm sure.

| How to set up a temporary directory for Arachne

| 6. if necessary, you can define an ARACHNETEMP environment variable which
| overrides the TEMP setting for Arachne 
| 7. for best performance, enable caching of local objects to the TEMP
| directory in Options | Local settings 
| 8. the amount of free disk space on the drive where the TEMP directory is
| located should be at least 512 KB, but the recommended size is at least
| several MB.

| D:\CACHE\ and D:\TMP\ are identical as far as how core with
| treat them, thus there is no bug in my code, rather, as I
| suspected last night, there must be some reason that TMP is
| sorta off limits to my core while the std core is around, or,
| your DOS or something else on your machine doesn't like that
| directory. Another experiment should narow this down: Eric,
| please set both your %temp% and your %arachnetemp% to some 
| brand new directory, this will duplicate the previous situation
| (buggy!) but with a new directory. If the problem is due to
| a turf war between cores, the problem will return as before, if
| not, then the problem has to be some dispute between your OS
| and that directory, I figure.

| I don't contradict myself, my bug count goes down steadily as the
| old ones are eliminated one by one however, there are at any given
| time a few new ones as 'fog' from ongoing change but that number
| hovers around the 2 - 6 mark. If I have ongoing testing from 
| guys like Eric, some of those bugs have a life span of half an hour.
| If I don't get tested, they pile up and have to be hunted down.
| I just rewrote the block that handles which cache to write to,
| saved 100 bytes and yes, there could be a bug there, so what? 
| We catch it fast and stomp it before it does any harm. But the

| would AVOID making newer versions incompatable with
| older versions. And by using your "go back" routine
| all you are doing is using the "change only one parameter

| you have piled change on change on change on change on

| risk the horrors of incompatability. So, since I find that most
| people are afraid of change anyway, I sez to myself I may as well
| just make it as good as I can and hope for the best -- knowing
| full well that the best doesn't always win. And really, how bad
| is the incompatability? It's only a probem for you and even then
| it's only a problem due to constant switching. If you used my
| core excusively, all these troubles would vanish, and, heck,
| VBM and myself have no problems even with constant core switching.

| how stupid command.com is ;-) I'm amazed you never pointed them
| out to me, or maybe you never ran into those lines that didn't
| work. Even with Cache2Temp Y I swap cores with no trouble but
| it could be that my temp is: "r:" and my arachnetemp is "r:\"
| The trailing backslash could be a problem since our core requires
| it but std core doesn't like it.

| The betamax example is interesting, it demonstrates my point that
| the best doesn't always win. Virtualy everyone agrees it was
| better than VHS, but the latter 'won' because folks needed to go
| with the 'standard', which becomes a self-fulfilling prophesy.
| Ditto OS/2 vs. Windows and a hundred other things we could list.

| As to 78 records, note that when the LP was invented, it was
| incompatable with 78 but they did it anyway because progress 
| requires change.  PCI incompatable with ISA, 31\2 floppy 
| incompatible with 51/4 drive. So, the point is that if progress 
| breaks compatability, so be it.

| And Eric, so far you are the only dude who has these incompatability
| problems, heck even Glenn has fired up my core and had no trouble.

| slowest part of arachne is all the stuff related to HTML parsing
| right? So, just as we now have one button recoding of any HTML page,
| supposing that we had some similar external .exe that could sort of
| 'pre parse' all HTML to do some preliminary work on it, like
| strip out comments, translate 'entities' -- I'm not sure how big the
| list could be but you see what I mean. I might be faster since,
| say, all enties are tranlsted at the same time, and html.c would
| be smaller and faster since some work is no longer done there.

| It is quite a bit different from 'err_disk.ah', first, it gives
| you the name of the directory, which is missing in 'err_disk.ah'
| also, there is no restart needed because it is one of my
| 'phony' '.ah!' files, like 'break.ah!' it is just a text box
| printout on the screen. However, what I'd like to be able to do
| is modify 'err_disk.ah' so that we  an send it the exact name
| to print, but I don't know how to do that.  I made this new
| file so that on startup, if any path mentioned in the .cfg is
| not able to have a file written there, or if it's smaller than
| 'mindiskspace' one recieves a warning message. As you know, Eric
| was having trouble writting to some of his directories, and I thought
| this might be useful to discover the problem. Anyway, I have this
| under the '#ifdef DEBUG' conditional, because it probably won't
| be needed normaly.

| IDIOT!  When POP3 logging is active, the blasted file handle
| is being used by *that* so I can't use it to log the command history
| as well. When it worked in the other dirctory it was because I had
| 'LogPOP3 N' ... so the file handle was free in that case.

| Thos spammassissin lines ARE gioing to nbbe in the downloaded file no
| matter wha you do.

| Since the server at 995.ca adds them... they are now a perminant part of
| the file.

| They _will_ be included in the headers of every email you send and
| receive via the 995.ca servers. (untill they stop using that crap the
| way that Cisnet has stopped using their spam bnlocker stuff)

| You can look at the headers of any email you receive by linking to it in
| your inbox and then hitting F6 to view it in plaintext mode instead of
| viewing the HTM file created when insight.exe converted it from
| plaintext to HTML format.
