I was born April 20, 1927 to Le Roy and Tena (Johnson Gullickson) Hamblock and in the Havre area, about 5 miles north of town. I went to the Whitlock School which was across the road east of Grampa Jacob and Gramma Anna ( Flock) Hamblock's place. Aunt Cora, one of Mom's sisters lived there for many years.
Both Mom and Dad both had been prevouisly married . Dad's first wife Jeanette Johnson, one of Mom's sisters died as the result of childbirth. Daughter Rosemary, died a few months later Mom's first husband, Henry Gullickson, a farmer died of tuberculosis.
I have 5 brothers, Clifford Gulllickson, (who was drug to death by a horse, before I was born), Burdine (Bud) Gullickson born June 9, 1908, passed away February 18, 1987 Henry Le Roy born August 10, 1922, Donald William born May 25, 1924, and two sisters, Rosemary (mentioned above) and Margaret Alice (Hamblock) Kejsar born March 13, 1931.
My first teacher was Miss Bangs , then there was Mrs. Holsapple (an old bag). Mrs.Landskov (her family lived at Grandpa and Jacob Gramma Anna (Flock's) place. Grandpa and Gramma had moved to town (Havre). When Mom and Dad would go to town, Aunt Cora would come and stay with us. She (Aunt Cora lived with. her brother Uncle Oscar (Johnson ) up north of where we lived.
I
can remember making mud pies. Brother Bud's daughter Betty used to play
with two white rats.
Betty,
Margie, and I were caught smoking in the attic one time and Dad caught
us, we never did that again. I pushed Margie down the stairs while she
was on her tricycle We use to go swimming in the resivoir north of the
house. We didn't know how to swim, we dog paddled but thought we were swimming.
Hank and Don tried to teac us how.
Margie
and I had a bike to ride to school when it didn't have flat tires. Dad
had a patch of potatoes and corn; it was Margie's and my job
to keep the weeds down. We had twin white calves; when they layed in the
field they looked like rocks. In the winter we use to skate on the reservoir,
but we had to clean the ice of first. I use to lay in the shade north of
the house and watch the clouds go by. I remember making butter in the barrel
churn; addingg color and salt to make it look better and taste better.
It looked pretty pale if you didn't color it. I had a blue table and chair
set that Grampa Johnson gave me, it later burned up in a fire.
I
remember making home made ice cream (Don still does on special ocassions)
They made some home made candy one time, put it out to cool and the cat
walked on it. We ate it anyway.
I
remember putting dead snakes on the fence. Dad made us take them down because
they smelled so bad.
We
use to take the cows (milk cow's then) one mile east to the pasture in
the morning and having to go back in the evening to get them so they could
be milked. We use to go to 4 - H meetings at different
homes
We
had dances at the Mountain View School, card parties at the Whitlock School
across the road from Grampa Hamblock's place.
We
use to have ice skating parties at the reservoir, having lots of fun
We
went to movie show on Saturday and sometimes in the evening. In the winter
another thing we did (the Warp kids and us) was to go over west to the
big coulees and slide down the hill with our sleds.
One time Bud came to the farm fixed up like a young black man. Charles showed him all around the farm, not realizing it was his brother.Nobody knew till later
We went to Big Sandy, Montana one time to see Bud and Jo, on the way home there was a cloudburst ahead of us. We went back to Big Sandy as the water was over the road. Some people got caught in the water and were washed washed down a coulee and drowned.
We would take the Model - T and practice driving it. When we got good at it, we were allowed to drive to town. I use to drive drive Margie to High School until she learned to drive..
When brother Don married Donna Ervin in 1947, Mom, Dad, Margie, Hank and I moved to town at 910- 4th Avenue. Don and Donna stayed on the farm. In 1957 a fire destroyed the basement dwelling, instead of rebuilding it a house was built on top .
Wasn't
much to do in town except go to the movies. I use to help at the DUTCH
SHOP which brother Charles and Aunt Lucille (Hamblock) Green (Dad's
sister) owned.

April through June 1959, Dan and I had a house built at 411 - 10th St. In the middle of building the house our son Keith was born on May 12, 1959. Dan and Don did the electrical work (wiring etc.) Dan did the painting with the help of others. We have lived there until we bought a house in the fall of 1983 and we're still living there in 1999.
