My Dad was born in Gory Ireland, County of Wexford on December 18, 1846. He came to America in 1869. You see the oldest son would inherit the property but according to your Dad's letter to Katie, all the Sinnott land in Ireland was taken from them.He came to Stephen (MN) in 1878 in July. He'd been working in Canada on his way to Minnesota. He filed a homestead north of what is now Stephen. He was the first settler in this territory. He had to walk to Crookston for supplies and carry them home on his back.
Sinnott Township was named after or for my Dad.
In March 1882, his sister Annie came from Ireland and lived with him 'til Aunt Annie married William Whalen. He took a foster son, Arthur McCollar to raise when Arthur's mother died.
There was a double wedding in the John Hughes home on October 4, 1886 when Pierce J. Sinnott and Catherine Hughes, and William Whalen and Annie Sinnott were married.
The Sinnotts had their foster son and the following children Mary, Annie, Pierce, Renee, Marguerite, Ruth, Hugh, Myrtle, Florence, Marie Elsie Theresa, and an adopted son Raymond. Hugh passed away when he was 5 days old and Marie Elsie Theresa when about 8 months old.
Dad retired from farming and moved to Stephen where he and Mom spent the rest of their lives. Dad died February 10, 1922 and is buried in the Catholic cemetary east of Stephen. Father Fraling was the celebrant.
Mary married Patrick Kane
Renee married Owen Charlton
Pierce married Elenor Wurtman
Marguerite married R. James Charlton
Florence married Clark McGlynn
(More on the Hughes) Cloud. I never heard that. Don ? when she could have she was the first to (teach?) here and was very young at the time
James Hughes, your Grandmother's Mama's brother died young. He was in a boat -------------- up in it an tipped, mustn't have been able to swim. Anyway, he was drowned.
Grandpa Hughes had a drug store in Stephen and they lived over it. That's where the double wedding took place. There was no church here at that time.
Of the William Whalen family, Kathleen (84 years) is the only one living. Of the James Sinnott family, none are living. Of the Pierce Sinnott family, Annie is 88 years old, Marguerite 83 years old, Ruth is 81 years old, Sister Teresa (Myrtle) is 77 and Florence is 75.
